The United Nations warns that more than 20 million people are on the verge of death by starvation and millions more are at immediate risk of dying from diseases associated with food shortages and drinking water. The humanitarian emergency in Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia and part of Nigeria has caused the United Nations to have unhesitatingly declared that the world is already experiencing the greatest humanitarian crisis since the creation of the international organization in 1945. In these 4 countries The tragedy has one aspect in common: the armed conflict.

The UN Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Stephen O’Brien, has called for a total of $ 4.4 billion by July to prevent the catastrophe. «Because people are going to die of hunger and because all the political victories achieved with such difficulty during the last years are going to take a step back,» he warned.

More than seven million Yemenis are starving and two-thirds of the country’s population, nearly 20 million people, need help of some kind to survive the war between the government and the Hutu rebels.

In Southern Sudan, the UN has officially declared famine in the country, the scene of a civil war between the president’s forces and his former vice-president. At present, more than 7.5 million people need assistance in a country «where the situation is worse than ever.»
