German Chancellor Angela Merkel has urged Turkey to end comparisons with Nazism and has threatened to ban meetings with Turkish politicians in Germany if they do not adhere to the country’s «constitutional principles».
The head of the government has thus alluded to the repeated warnings issued by herself or by members of her cabinet following the repeated accusations of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan against Germany, which he accused of «Nazi practices.»
Unlike in the Netherlands, where Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s Executive explicitly banned these meetings, there has not been a general veto in Germany so far, although some acts have been prevented on grounds of security.
German Chancellor Peter Altmaier on Monday condemned Erdogan’s latest comparison in an interview with television station N24 and stressed that Germany «will defend his honor.»
On the Turkish side, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus has assured that they know perfectly well what Nazism and Fascism mean and in this sense he stressed that when they use these terms in relation to European countries they do so for the sake of their «European friends «So that they do not fall into the trap of Nazism.
