El descubrimiento de ondas gravitacionales, Premio Princesa de Asturias de Investigación Científica

Los físicos Rainer Weiss, Kip Thorne, Barry Barish y la Colaboración Científica LIGO, han sido galardonados con el Premio Princesa de Asturias de Investigación Científica y Técnica 2017, por la detección directa de las ondas gravitacionales, ondulaciones del espacio-tiempo anticipadas por Albert Einstein en su Teoría de la Relatividad General hace ahora un siglo.

El Grupo de Relatividad y Gravitación de la Universitat de les Illes Balears es el único grupo de investigación de España que ha participado en les tres detecciones de ondas gravitacionales a través de la Colaboración Científica LIGO y GEO. Se trata de ondas que genera una masa, como puede ser un cuerpo celeste, sobre un plano, el cual se curva por su peso, dejando un rastro gravitacional a través del espacio en forma de onda, tal y como ocurre cuando una piedra cae sobre un estanque de agua.

Este descubrimiento está considerado uno de los logros científicos más importantes del siglo al validar uno de los pilares de la física moderna -la teoría general de la relatividad- y abrir una nueva ventana para observar el Universo.

The Relativity and Gravitation Group of the University of the Balearic Islands is the only research group in Spain that has participated in the three detections of gravitational waves through the Scientific Collaboration LIGO and GEO. These are waves that generate a mass, such as a celestial body, on a plane, which curves by its weight, leaving a gravitational trace through the space in wave form, as it happens when a stone falls on A pond of water.

This discovery is considered one of the most important scientific achievements of the century in validating one of the pillars of modern physics – the general theory of relativity – and opening a new window to observe the Universe.
