El imposible mapa de los suicidios en España – Málaga 24h

Un reciente estudio elaborado por investigadoras de la Universidad de Cantabria ha puesto sobre la mesa inquietantes datos sobre el mapa de suicidios en las 50 provincias españolas desde el año 2000 al 2012. Quizás el que más llama la atención es el elevadísimo porcentaje de personas que se quitan la vida en Málaga, y que triplica a los que los hacen, por ejemplo, en Madrid: 150 por cada millón de habitantes.

Sin embargo, analizando los datos puede verse que no muestran la realidad, ya que hay graves carencias a la hora de obtenerlos. Así, en Madrid el Instituto Nacional de Estadística no tuvo acceso a los datos de suicidios hasta el año 2013, algo que hizo que en ese año el número de suicidios aumentara un 250%, por el cambio en la metodología del registro.

Oficialmente, en España se registraron 3.602 muertes por suicidio en 2015, último año con datos del INE. Se quitaron la vida 2.680 hombres y 922 mujeres. Es, con mucha diferencia, la principal causa de muerte no natural.

Pero el proceso que se lleva a cabo en caso de defunciones en circunstancias violentas o accidentales, hace que no sepamos realmente cuantos se producen: en estos casos, el médico debe comunicar el fallecimiento al juzgado de guardia. Una autopsia realizada en los Institutos de Medicina Legal determinará la causa de la muerte. Pero, frecuentemente, el personal del juzgado comunica al Registro Civil el presunto motivo de la defunción sin esperar a los resultados definitivos de la autopsia, que se demoran si hay que analizar muestras. Ese dato prematuro es el que puede llegar al Instituto Nacional de Estadística y el que analiza este estudio.

Pero el número de muertes por suicidio que figura en el INE no coincide con el de los Institutos de Medicina Legal, es mucho menor y la diferencia es abismal: así, otro estudio en 16 provincias de España realizado por el Instituto de Medicina Legal de Sevilla encontró 563 suicidios sin registrar solo en 1 año, en 2007.

A menudo, además, los certificados de defunción no registran los suicidios, por el estigma social o por la creencia de que no se va a cobrar un seguro de vida.

Los expertos estiman que, si se computaran correctamente, la cifra de suicidios en España aumentaría en unos 1000 anuales.

But the number of deaths due to suicide in the INE does not coincide with that of the Institutes of Legal Medicine, is much smaller and the difference is abysmal: thus, another study in 16 provinces of Spain conducted by the Institute of Legal Medicine in Seville Found 563 unregistered suicides in only 1 year, in 2007.

Often, in addition, death certificates do not record suicides, social stigma, or the belief that life insurance will not be collected.

Experts estimate that, if computed correctly, the number of suicides in Spain would increase by about 1000 per year.
