España invertirá 1,5 millones en Rota para convertir la base en cuartel general de la UE

España tiene previsto invertir más de 1,5 millones de euros en la base naval de Rota, en Cádiz, con el objetivo de convertirla en cuartel general de la Unión Europea y centro de mando de la Operación Atalanta tras el Brexit.

Actualmente, la operación de lucha contra la piratería en el Índico es liderada desde el cuartel general de Northwood, pero la salida del Reino Unido de la Unión Europea ha llevado a España a proponer formalmente su traslado a Rota.

El primer paso para conseguirlo será la certificación de la base gaditana como Cuartel General Operacional de la UE, algo que se espera certificar con un ambicioso ejercicio que se realizará durante la próxima semana al que asistirán autoridades españolas y europeas como la ministra de Defensa, María Dolores de Cospedal.

Esta oferta se enfrenta a la candidatura presentada por Italia, que también aspira a liderar Atalanta en coordinación con el mando que ya ejerce de la Operación Sophia, dedicado a la lucha contra el tráfico ilegal de personas en aguas del Mediterráneo.
