The House of Lords, the upper house of the British Parliament, on Tuesday approved a legislative amendment against the plans of the UK Prime Minister, Theresa May, to leave the European Union’s single market after Brexit.

The Lords approved by 245 votes in favor and 218 against an amendment to the bill that obliges ministers to negotiate whether the United Kingdom will remain a member of the European Economic Area, which means it would remain in the single market.
