De hecho, está previsto que este lunes esté completamente operativo con un total de 375 camas, el Hospital de Día, la planta de cirugía con 10 quirófanos y 7 salas de endoscopia, una unidad de salud mental con 26 camas y una unidad para lesionados medulares. El Estado cedió el edificio a la Junta de Andalucía en 2003 tras varios años de reivindicaciones pero los gobiernos socialistas al frente de la comunidad nunca le dieron uso. Fue en febrero de 2021, todavía en plena pandemia, cuando el ejecutivo de Juanma Moreno, abrió 7 de sus 13 plantas para pacientes de coronavirus. Pocos meses después, en julio, el hospital abrió una planta más para otros pacientes ajenos al Covid-19. El año pasado se abrieron 3 plantas más, sumando 101 camas más y sumando los servicios de administración, mantenimiento, laboratorio, farmacia y vestuarios, entre otros. Una de las últimas incorporaciones ha sido la apertura de los quirófanos desde el pasado mes de febrero. El hospital fue rebautizado con el nombre de Antonio Muñoz Cariñanos, médico militar asesinado en Sevilla por ETA en el año 2000.
