El sector del voto digital ha crecido exponencialmente en la última década y cada vez existe un mayor consenso entre los especialistas de la necesidad de digitalizar unas elecciones generales. Con motivo de los comicios municipales y autonómicos de este domingo 28 de mayo, los profesionales del voto digital reclaman más voluntad política para avanzar legislativamente hacia la implementación de un modelo electoral digitalizado. Para los especialistas del sector ya existe la infraestructura tecnológica para llevar a cabo este tipo de votaciones electrónicas masivas de una forma segura. Una prueba de ello es el proyecto Vocdoni, que se creó en 2018 por un grupo de expertos en criptografía y tecnologías descentralizadas, que utilizan tecnología blockchain para garantizar la seguridad de las elecciones. Sin embargo, lo que los expertos creen que debe evolucionar es el marco legislativo español para adaptarse así a la democracia digital. La organización de las últimas votaciones generales en España supuso un coste aproximado de 136 millones de euros según el Ministerio del Interior. Para los expertos, digitalizar los comicios supondría un ahorro de dinero, así como múltiples beneficios para el votante y para el Estado. En el caso de España, ya se han llevado a cabo algunas pruebas de voto 100% digital tanto en entidades privadas como en la Administración. En 2022 Vocdoni organizó de forma exitosa la primera votación completamente digital con tecnología blockchain organizada por el Ayuntamiento de Bellpuig, en Lleida.
