Salir de Marrakech rumbo a las aldeas del sur, más próximas al epicentro, es adentrarse en los diferentes niveles de catástrofe por el terremoto. Es el segundo amanecer al raso para cientos de familias, a las que la fortuna sólo les permite poder contar que siguen vivos tras perderlo todo, con sus casas reducidas a escombros. Ese es el presente para Ibrahim y los suyos, también el de Hussein y su familia y para la del joven Hamid, que nos describe la destrucción en su calle y en el resto de su comunidad. Con algunas viviendas de cemento sostenidas en un frágil equilibrio, el que separa la vida de la muerte en El Bour, en el Alto Atlas, donde se vela a una de sus vecinas fallecida en el seísmo. En la provincia de Haouz, Fatna cuenta que ha estado atrapada tras caérsele encima el techo de su habitación mientras dormía. Rescatada por Ismail, entre otros, que explica que fueron en su ayuda nada más escuchar sus gritos. Un objetivo, el del rescate contrarreloj, que persiguen ahora las fuerzas militares y de emergencias, para las que el mayor reto es poder llegar a estas aldeas remotas, sin electricidad ni telefonía y con carreteras cortadas por los desprendimientos. Localidades levantadas mayoritariamente en adobe en las que se suceden los entierros y la localización de más cadáveres sepultados entre las ruinas por el temblor.
