Llevaba varios días en Vitoria escapando de su expareja, con la que había sufrido ya episodios de violencia. Venía de Valencia, donde residía con el presunto asesino y padre de su hija de tres años y de los gemelos de los que estaba embarazada de 14 semanas.Maialen tenía 32 años y en Valencia, estaba catalogada como víctima de riesgo de violencia de género. Al llegar a Vitoria, se le rebajó a riesgo básico porque su ubicación era secreta.Se cree que fue la propia víctima la que le pasó la dirección. Su madre le había alquilado la habitación y es quien se ha quedado con la pequeña, que ha presenciado todo y se encontraba junto al cadáver en la habitación del apartahotel cuando ha llegado la Ertzaintza.La expareja ha sido detenida en Zaragoza en un taxi cuando intentaba escapar después de haber sido visto en el apartahotel.
