Las pequeñas Kadhija y Cherive dan ya el doble de trabajo. Nacieron unidas por el abdomen, la parte central del hígado y la parte baja del esternón, como muestra la imagen en 3D. Para preparar la separación, la Unidad de Simulación del hospital creó dos maniquíes exactos a las pequeñas para realizar un simulacro en el que prever “qué situaciones, qué momentos pueden ser críticos durante este proceso”. Una vez preparado el camino, tiene lugar la cirugía real con 20 profesionales implicados que se guían también por el molde impreso en 3D. Después de cinco horas de delicada intervención, las pequeñas pueden ocupar ya cunas diferentes. En pocos días recibirán el alta. Regresarán a Mauritania como seres independientes pero unidas para siempre por una de esas historias en las que ciencia y solidaridad trabajan para un mismo fin.

Little Kadhija and Cherive already do double the work. They were born joined by the abdomen, the central part of the liver and the lower part of the sternum, as the 3D image shows. To prepare for the separation, the hospital’s Simulation Unit created two mannequins exactly like the little ones to carry out a simulation in which to anticipate «what situations, what moments may be critical during this process.» Once the path is prepared, the actual surgery takes place with 20 professionals involved who are also guided by the 3D printed mold. After five hours of delicate intervention, the little ones can now occupy different cribs. In a few days they will be discharged. They will return to Mauritania as independent beings but forever united by one of those stories in which science and solidarity work for the same goal.
