La Operación Paso del Estrecho ha vuelto tras dos años de cierre de fronteras con Marruecos y lo hace con problemas. Estos días se están registrando largas colas en Ceuta y Melilla de miles de personas que quieren cruzar a Marruecos. A este aumento de viajeros se suma que este país exige el pasaporte Covid para entrar, lo que ralentiza el movimiento de los vehículos. La afluencia este año es tal que la Delegación del Gobierno en Ceuta reconoce que la cifra de vehículos y pasajeros en la línea Algeciras-Ceuta ha aumentado un 45% respecto al mismo periodo de la última operación, en 2019. En la barriada ceutí de Loma Colmenar es donde se concentra el mayor número de vehículos de personas que quieren regresar a Marruecos para pasar sus vacaciones. Esta zona de la ciudad autónoma es paso obligado para poder cruzar la frontera y según las autoridades locales, diariamente pasan más de 2.000 vehículos que tienen que aguardar colas de más de 5 horas. Muchas de estas personas tienen que esperar en el interior de los coches y en muchos casos hay familias enteras con niños que tienen que soportar altas temperaturas. Muchos se quejan de la falta de puntos de venta de comida o bebida, la escasez de aseos o de fuentes donde refrescarse así como falta de zonas de sombra. Ante esta situación, se han producido varias manifestaciones denunciando estas condiciones infrahumanas y el Gobierno ha tenido que desplegar policías en la zona para evitar altercados.
