Por contra, la Axarquía es la comarca que experimenta mayor crecimiento de habitantes. Salares se convierte en la localidad con menos población de la provincia, con tan solo 173 habitantes empadronados. Alfarnatejo, Alfarnate, Canillas de Aceituno, Árchez, Alcaucín, Salares, Arenas, Benarrabá, Genalguacil, Jubrique, Alpandeire, Benalauría, Faraján, Igualeja, Serrato, Algatocín, Benadalid, Cortes de la Frontera, Jimera de Líbar, Cañete la Real y Yunquera han sufrido importantes pérdidas de población en los últimos años por encima del 20%.
