Merkel asegura que el Brexit “no es la prioridad” de la UE

Nuevo revés para Londres. La canciller alemana, Angela Merkel, dio este jueves una nueva muestra de que las negociaciones sobre el divorcio entre la UE y el Reino Unido no van a ser fáciles. “El futuro de la Unión a Veintisiete es la prioridad, no el Brexit”, espetó Merkel en la cumbre europea. Durante el encuentro, los 27 dieron una nueva muestra de unidad y aclararon que sus esfuerzos se centran en otras agendas y el brexit es, de momento un segundo plato: Merkel y Macron quieren reforzar el euro, elaborar el esquema de una política de seguridad y defensa en 3 meses y apuntar las claves de la política comercial en la era Trump.

Por su parte, el Gobierno británico ha aceptado esta semana todas las condiciones de negociación de Bruselas. La debilitada primera ministra británica, Theresa May, dio el jueves por la noche una prueba más de cesión al exponer los primeros detalles de su propuesta para garantizar los derechos de los europeos que viven en las islas. Así, May ofreció —aunque con matices— otorgar el derecho a quedarse en Reino Unido a todo ciudadano europeo llegado antes del Brexit.

Reino Unido reconocerá automáticamente el derecho a quedarse a todos aquellos ciudadanos que lleven cinco años de residencia en la fecha de corte que se establezca para el Brexit, y aquellos que no sumen esos cinco años en dicho momento, tendrán derecho a permanecer hasta que puedan acreditarlos y garantizarse así un estatus de residencia permanente.
