El jefe del Estado Mayor de las Fuerzas Armadas de Irán, Mohamad Baqeri, ha afirmado que Teherán «no está interesado» en un mayor incremento de las tensiones regionales, si bien ha recalcado que dará «una respuesta aplastante» a cualquier agresión. Durante una conversación telefónica con el ministro turco, ha subrayado que esperan que “a retirada de Estados Unidos de la región ponga fin a todo el caos y a los conflictos». Así, ha acusado a Washington de iniciar «una nueva ronda de tensiones» en la región con el bombardeo que mató el 3 de enero al general Qasem Soleimani. En este sentido, Baqeri ha resaltado que Irán llevó a cabo en respuesta los bombardeos contra bases iraquíes en las que hay desplegados soldados de Estados Unidos a pesar de que Washington envió mensajes intentando calmar la situación.

The chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Iran, Mohamad Baqeri, has said that Tehran «is not interested» in a greater increase in regional tensions, although he stressed that he will give «an overwhelming response» to any aggression. During a telephone conversation with the Turkish minister, he stressed that they hope that “the withdrawal of the United States from the region will put an end to all the chaos and conflicts.” Thus, he has accused Washington of initiating “a new round of tensions” in the region with the bombing that killed General Qasem Soleimani on January 3. In this regard, Baqeri has stressed that Iran carried out the bombings against Iraqi bases in which US soldiers are deployed despite the fact that Washington sent messages trying to calm the situation.
